Smile, it’s the first step in the rest of your life

This morning I woke up with the thought in my head “what a beautiful day”.  I hadn’t even opened my eyes yet and could feel the excitement within about facing the day.  I had nothing special planned for the day other than to be happy!

While lying there smiling and enjoying the sun shining on my face I thought about why today was such a good day.  I realized at that moment that our thoughts have the power of changing our mood for the day.  Think about it, if you wake up with a smile on your face, how does your day go?  Usually, I would say, you have a good day.  When you wake up and you say to yourself, “I don’t want to get up or go to work!” …. how does your day usually go then?  You may not have a bad day but you certainly don’t accomplish what you intend to accomplish and you aren’t necessarily nice to everyone.

When we are in the thick of a difficult time it sometimes feels like you just can’t put one foot in front of the other.  We focus solely on the issues at hand and forget about all the blessings we are presented every single day.  I understand this from my own experience.  When my son died, I couldn’t begin to think about anything other than the fact that I would never be able to hold him again.  I focused on never being able to hear his laugh again or even watch him grow and become a young man and father.  I was frozen in the heaviness of the pain that consumed my body, heart and soul.  I focused on only that.

Today I propose that you try to find one thing to be grateful for knowing you are in the middle of a painful time.  Challenges and blessings are one.  They come together.  We all face challenges and at the same time, we can choose to feel the blessings of the day.  You can smile and cry; it is ok to do both!

There are many things that helped me get from that point to where I am today; smiling when I wake up in the morning being so grateful for all of life’s experiences.

This blog is a start for you to see there are many ways to start your healing process.  Today, I offer you one particular tool to use when you are in the midst of that very dark and difficult time.   A very simple task; look into the future only as far as you feel you can.  If that means you can only look five minutes into the future, then do that.  It could be to only take the next breath.  That’s ok, because that is the beginning of your new life.  You have successfully taken your next step.

I send you peace and love today and always.
